Measuring nutrient fluxes across the sediment-water interface using benthic chambers

چکیده

This paper presents a simple model to determine the benthic fluxes of matter across the sediment-water Interface when a benth~c hamber is used. The model is based on accepting that the limiting step for the overall rate of transfer while the chamber is in position is the diffusion through the diffusive boundary layer (DBL) overlying the sediment, and it assumes that this rate is necessarily affected by the procedure employed to measure the flux. Alteration of the benthic fluxes due to the actlon of macrofauna is included in the model and, operatively, is expressed in terms of a reduction in the thickness of the DBL between the sediment and the water. If the diffusive fluxes are determined simultaneously w ~ t h the benthic chamber experiments, a value can be estimated for the thickness of the 'stagnant film'. Owing to the assumptions made and to the micro-heterogeneities of the sediment, this thickness can be considered to have both an operative and a statistical meaning, with respect to the entire surface area covered by the chamber. The values calculated in the Bay of Cadiz (SW Spain) vary between 0.36 and 0.71 nun, wh~ch are in agreement w ~ t h measurements of this film made by different techniques in other littoral ecosystems. However, the values of the in situ fluxes estimated using this model and by other established procedures described in the literature can differ by more than SO%, for the same experiment, in strongly irrigated zones.

Consequences of Increasing Hypoxic Disturbance on Benthic Communities and Ecosystem Functioning

Disturbance-mediated species loss has prompted research considering how ecosystem functions are changed when biota is impaired. However, there is still limited empirical evidence from natural environments evaluating the direct and indirect (i.e. via biota) effects of disturbance on ecosystem functioning. Oxygen deficiency is a widespread threat to coastal and estuarine communities. While the ne...

Interaction Between Hydrodynamics and Mass- Transfer at the Sediment-Water Interface

Modeling mass-transfer across the sediment-water interface is a significant issue in environmental hydraulics. In fact diffusional exchanges of solutes between the bed sediment and the overlying water column could greatly affect water quality. Particularly, diffusional flux of dissolved oxygen (DO) towards the bed sediments from the water column could be responsible for low and unacceptable lev...

Benthic algae control sediment–water column fluxes of organic and inorganic nitrogen compounds in a temperate lagoon

Coastal lagoons are a common land-margin feature worldwide and function as an important filter for nutrients entering from the watershed. The shallow nature of lagoons leads to dominance by benthic autotrophs, which can regulate benthic–pelagic coupling. Here we demonstrate that both microalgae and macroalgae are important in controlling dissolved inorganic as well as organic nitrogen (DIN and ...

Inter-annual variability of the Pelagic-Benthic coupling in the upwelling system off central Chile

The coastal region of central Chile (36 S) is one of the most productive coastal systems, characterized by a marked seasonality in the upwelling regime, that brings subsurface waters rich in nutrient and poor in oxygen (ESSW) into the euphotic zone. This oceanographic condition depends basically on the equatorward wind strength and is modified on different time scales, with the El Niño-Southern...

Denitrification measurements of sediments using cores and chambers

Denitrification is commonly measured using in situ benthic chambers or laboratory incubations of sediment cores. These techniques are similar in principle but differ considerably in cost and practicality. Despite widespread use of both techniques, it is uncertain whether they give comparable results. We compared cores and chambers for measuring fluxes (dissolved oxygen [DO], N2, NH4, NO3 and NO...
